 Westleigh 1xl Vs Euxton 1xl  7/6/2008

Westleigh travelled to Euxton for the first time in plenty of years.  Barclay, who was  standing in as captain for the second week, won the toss and put Euxton in to bat on what looked like a perfect bowling wicket.  Euxtons openers got off to the best possible start hitting both Barclay and Entwistle to the boundary on more than one occasion putting on 83 before Scott Fitzmartin, making his first team debut for the season, took the first wicket with P Entwistle making a good catch. L Sykes took the next wicket with Jamie Keenan taking a catch.  With runs flowing freely it was turning into a long afternoon in the field for Westleigh.  K Ogden replaced Fitzmartin but only managed TWO overs with 4 no-balls before Barclay lost patience and took him off,  S Blacker replacing him for just 3 balls before N Sykes threw  a rocket of a throw in and dislocated his finger, off Stu went to have it re-set.  Barclay and Entwistle returned to finish off the overs with a couple of run outs and a couple more catches.   Euxtons innings finished on 238 for 9 off 48 overs

D Barclay 2-83 J Entwistle 1-68 K Ogden 0-9 S Fitzmartin 1-30 L sykes 0-34

Westleighs innings started as normal with the first wicket going with just 18 on the board with B Blood being caught for 4.  N Sykes came and went as did Leon and Jamie the score at this stage 36-4 P Entwistle was next quickly followed by K Ogden , K Buxton went soon after with the scores on 62-7 things were not looking good . Entwistle joined Barclay at the crease and set about just having fun. Barclay was on form hitting the ball to all parts of the ground and with good solid support from Entwistle the score raced along.  Entwistle finally fell missing a straight ball for 16 but not before he had shared a partnership of 80 with Barclay with the score at 146-8.  Fitzmartin came next and managed to stay long enough to see Barclay to his 50 before he was bowled round his legs for 2.  S Blacker came through the pain barrier to join Barclay but only lasted 3 balls.  With Barclay running out of partners Westleighs innings finished on 162 all out with Barclay left stranded on 61 not out off 62 balls.

P Entwistle 27 K Buxton 18 J Entwistle 16 D Barclay 61

The second team entertained Whally Range at home.  Westleigh batted first and were bowled out for 66 and Whally Range knocked them off in 7 overs ...... Enough said.

Highlight of the day all players got to watch the Derby after the game  (quote by Paul Buxton).

Westleigh vs Lostock

Westleigh welcomed Lostock to the Pingot on what was the hottest Saturday of the season so far. Kev had a change of fortune and won the toss.  He invited the Lostock captain to bat first.  Lostock got off to an indifferent start losing their first wicket with just 6 on the board an easy catch by J Wilkinson at square leg from a short ball off Jonny Entwistle.  Barclay was soon in on the act trapping Cockton LBW with the score on 17.  But Lostock’s pro strode to the crease and set about hitting the ball hard from the very first ball he faced, with Cregan having a bit of luck at the other end their score was flying along.  Jonny bowled his allotted 7 overs without taking another wicket.   K Ogden was introduced but was only given 4 overs before the Sheppard’s crook came out having gone for 40 in his 4 overs.  Brace took Barclay off as well to take the pace off the bowling.  Brace and Wilkinson tried to stem the flow of runs but on an outfield that if the ball went past the fielder there was no chance of stopping if from reaching the boundary the score raced along to 139 before Jonny caught the pro for 49, Nick Sykes tipping it over the bar into Jonnys’  hands.  L  Sykes replaced Brace after just 6 overs having gone for 35.   Flanagan came next and Westleigh had to wait just as long again to take the next wicket,  Flanagan being given out LBW for 50 off Sykes’ bowling.  Cregan had reached his 100 by this time and with 2 partnerships of 100+ it had become a very long afternoon for Westleigh.  Barclay was reintroduced to the attack and finally  got his man clean bowling Cregan for a fine 138.  One more wicket fell, Sykes bowling the big swinging  lssa for 16, Lostock finished on 293 for 6 after their 48 overs

D Barclay 2 – 60  J Entwistle 1 – 31  K Ogden 0 – 40  K Brace 1 – 35  J Wilkinson 0 – 71  L Sykes 2 – 38

Kevs team talk was patience and keep wickets in hand.  Well B Blood went 6th ball fishing at a wide one outside off stump that’s  1-1.  Kev went soon after being bowled for 0 that’s  14-2.  N Sykes was next caught for 11 that made it 16-3 when chasing 293 and what was a fantastic batting track Westleigh feared the worse.  P Entwistle continued the trend of not hitting many falling LBW for just 1 that’s  36-4.  With Westleigh thinking that they may be hitting the bar early out strode Jamie Keenan to join L Sykes.   Both batsmen set about entertaining the crowd with some big big hitting they mustard a partnership of 117 before Keenan went for 66 with five 4s and six 6s with 3 landing in the canal.  K Buxton joined Leon and they put on 30 when Leon was out LBW for 68 with eight 4s and three 6s and with the biggest 6 of the day out the ground and over the pingot into the gardens.  Ogden joined Buxton but only made 10 before he played his usual shot jumping to square and being bowled off stump.  Barclay was next and he and Buxton were going well before Buxton was bowled after hitting his first proper score of the season 25.  The score at this stage was 215-8 Wilkinson came out but only got to 10 before he was bowled by Lostocks pro with a very good Yorker. Jonny joined Barclay with the score on 232-9 they set about trying to save the game by not getting out.  Entwistles first ball produced the shot of the day creaming one through extra cover for 4.  With only 3 overs left and Lostock getting twitchy Barclay finally fell LBW for 24, Entwistle not out 9 Westleigh ended on 254 all out.  What a very good game of cricket it was at the Pingot this week with both teams playing the game how it should be played.  Well done to both sets of players

Newton Heath vs. Westleigh

The first team were on their travels this week to Newton Heath.

On a wet wicket Kev Brace was desperate to win a toss, but true to his form this year he called tails and, yes, it came down ......................HEADS. (Kev’s thinking about just asking the opposing captain what he wants to do instead of tossing up).   Well no surprise Westleigh were asked to bat first they got off to the worse possible start, losing the opener in the 2nd over with the score on just 4, the 2nd wicket followed in the 5th over with just 14 on the board, Bernard  forgetting to move his feet and being bowled with a good Yorker.  Nick Sykes and Paul Entwistle rolled up their sleeves and set about building a partnership of 47 off 20 overs before Nick was caught going for another big 6 for 39.  Next to come and go was K Buxton (go on have a guess) yes ok your right Karl was out, caught on the boundary for 4 which made it 65 for 4 after 25 overs with Westleigh finding things hard going.  This brought Jamie Keenan to the crease and in true Jamie form set about the Newton bowling hitting the ball to all parts of the ground, Jamie and Paul put on 53 in 10 overs before Paul was out LBW for 21 with the only ball of the innings to keep low.  Barclay came and went for 9 being caught at deep fine leg by (I’m not interested) Hampson who just stuck out a hand and the ball managed to stick in it, much to the amazement of the Newton team.  Keenan finally went for a entertaining 78 being bowled with a quick one off the spinner.  Makinson was next out for just 1 which brought Jonny (I’m going to hit 50) Entwistle to the crease and was promptly out first ball LBW going back to a full length  ball.  With the pressure on S Blacker going in number 11 on a hat-trick he managed to block the next ball, Westleighs’ innings finished on 195 for 9 with J Wilkinson on 13 not out.

N Sykes 39 P Entwistle 21 J Keenan 78

After what are probably one of the best teas league the Westleigh bowlers had big ideas of having a bowl on a wicket that should have suited the movement of Barclay and Entwistle.  Barclay took the first wicket in the 3rd over with the score on 8 (what a mistake this was).   T Lance Newtons overseas player came to the party and wasted no time getting into his stride, hitting what proved to be his favourite shot over mid wicket for 4 off his 2nd ball . Entwistle struggled to find any sort of rhythm and after just 4 overs and going for 32 was given a rest.  Martin and Lance were going along at 6 an over before Barclay struck again removing Martin for 31.  Makinson, bowling at the other end faired not much better than Entwistle going for 27 in 4 overs before he too was given a rest.  With Lance getting hold of Barclay Kev made a double bowling change bringing on both spinners hoping to stem the flow of runs.  With the score at 110 for 2 after just 16 overs it looked like an early finish was on the cards.  Brace and Wilkinson bowled some good stuff but again Lance and Johnston kept the run rate up and with the next wicket only falling in the 28th over.  With the score on 165 for 3 the game was more or less dead for Westleigh,  Johnston being bowled for 44 by Wilkinson.  Lance went next for 86 but not before he had been dropped twice, a  hard caught and bowled off Brace and a dolly off Jonny (Freddie, that’s Krueger not Flintoff) Entwistle who had also let two through his legs while fielding on the boundary.  Brace took another quick wicket which made it 176 for 5 after 30 overs.  No more wickets fell with Newton getting home after just 34 overs and with Westleigh reflecting on what a bad day it had been at the office.  There were only two things left to do, shake hands and go for a pint (well a few).  A bit of bowling practice is on the cards this week and maybe catching as well.

Westleigh 2nd vs Newton Heath 2nd

The second team went down by 68 runs at The Pingot. Newton Heath scored 200 all out in 38 overs. At 99-7 Westleigh were on top with wickets tumbling regularly, but Barrow (81) and Catherall (25) shared a 80 run partnership to take the Heath total up to 200. Leon Sykes would like to say he bowled well for his 4-41, but ….

Kyle Ogden bounced his way to 3 wickets before staggering off to his 18th party.

Westleigh lost both openers early, Keenan the only Westleigh player to not be caught as he was bowled by the only low bouncing ball of the day. Sykes and Lowe took the total to 49-3, before Sykes was caught at gully. came and went quickly, before Raines and Lowe shared the home teams best partnership, Lowe being dismissed on 49 by an excellent catch under the sightscreen. No other partnerships developed with only Raines, 16 and Entwistle, 12 managing double figures as the Westleigh innings petered out to 132 all out.

Westleigh v Bolton 1 Team 26/4/2008

Westleigh entertained Bolton for their first home match of the season, on a damp wicket. Kev Brace carried on his good run of form by losing the toss for the second match running. Bolton chose to bat first much to the delight of the Westleigh bowlers, With Barclay and Entwistle bowling good lines the Bolton batters found it tough going. The first wicket fell with just 10 on the board, Bolton's opener skying one to mid off , with all the Westleighs fielders getting ready for the next ball Bernard Blood took a good catch, Barclay got in on the act with K Buxton taking a very good low diving catch to make the score 15-2. A double bowing change saw Stu Blacker mark out a run up , all the westleigh players thought this was a bit much for a player to mark the captains run up out for him. Stu's first over was a long one with 4 big big wides in it', but his second over was much better, with K Ogden at the other end giving the Bolton batters a few buffet balls to hit Bolton got up to 33 before Blacker took his first ever wicket in the first team with P Entwistle taking an easy catch. Blackers next victim was Bolton's pro who was bowled for 21 with a ball that took a worms head off it kept that low. Brace replaced Ogden from the canal end and carried on from last week bowling tight and picking up a couple of wickets, he should have had 3 but for J Entwistle dropping a dolly in the covers,( Entwistle's record is two matches given Brace out LBW and I drop catch off Braces bowling) well done Jonny. Wilkinson replaced Blacker from the club house end and picked up two wickets due to good tight spin bowling. With 5 over's left Brace brought back Barclay and Entwistle to finish off the Bolton innings for 127 all out with Barclay returning with figures of 8.2 over's 2 for 8.

 D Barclay 2-8 J Entwistle 2-19 S Blacker 2-29 K Ogden 0-29 K Brace 2-21 J Wilkinson 2-19

Westleigh's batting got off to a steady start for the second week runnung with Blood and Brace putting on 21 before Blood was bowled with one that nipped back. That brought N Sykes to the crease who was in no mood to hang about hitting a quick fire 20 before being caught by the only man out in the deep(much to the annoyance of Brace). Jim Keenan made his return to the first team and put on 10 before Brace was bowled blocking a straight ball and watching it spin and onto his wicket and dislodging the bail. Buxton was next Brace told him that there was only one fielder in the deep Keenan told him there was only one fielder in the deep so Buxton proceeded to give the fielder catching practice second ball(well done Karl). Entwistle joined Keenan to steady the ship and a partnership of 42 before he was caught in the deep off a full toss (have you seen the pattern here) Keenan went next ball driving through cover but was caught by a good catch. With only 15 runs to get Barclay and Ogden saw Westleigh home with 15 over's to spare, Ogden hitting a 6 to win. The highlights of Westleigh's innings were Sykes 20 Keenan 24 the Bolton's captain playing roly poly while chasing a ball on Westleigh's flat outfield and Bolton's pro bouncing off the fence trying to stop a 4 .

Westleigh v Bolton 2 Team 26/4/2008

Westleigh travelled to Bolton hoping to reproduce the winning form of last week. K Andrews followed the trend of losing the toss, Bolton invited Westleigh to bat first and with a good opening partnership of 50 between Andrews and Makinson things looked good. But with the old saying in cricket one wicket brings two, with wickets falling regualy and only four batters getting into double figures Westleigh finished on 154 all out after 44 over's.

K Andrews 15 S Makinson 33 D Lowe 13 T Kay 18.

The bowling saw the return of S Makinson after missing last week with a broken toe (nail) and P Buxton (too many injuries to mention) and with some good and indifferent bowling Westleigh just couldn't make the break through. Bolton's openers put on 96 before Westleigh took the first wicket and with only 154 on the board they were always up against it. A second wicket stand of 35 saw Bolton reach 129-2. Two more quick wickets took Bolton to 145-4. Bolton got over the line with 2 over's to spare which is a valiant effort from the Westleigh bowlers, Once again young Robby Entwistle returned with figures of 9 over's for 18 runs and was unlucky not to take 3 wickets(so he tells me).

S Fitzmartain 0-29 I Sephton 0-28 S Makinson 3-35 P Buxton 1-17 R Entwistle 0-18 A Woodcock 0-18 K Andrews 0-5

Westleigh v's Lostock 1st Team 19/4/2008

What has to be the coldest day ever to play cricket both teams got off to a winning start.

The first team were away against Lostock, Kev Brace carried on his form from last year by losing the toss and being invited to bat on a damp wicket. Westleigh got off to a steady start before Kev was given out LBW by none other than Jonny Entwistle (Big b**ls to give your captain out) well done Jonny.   Next to go was Bernard (Felix) Blood who skied one to mid off while watching a 747 flying over head.  The Sykes brothers set about putting on a good partnership before Nick was out caught for 20.  With the score ticking on nicely a change of umpires saw the fall of the next wicket, (Yes you guessed it) Jonny giving Leon Sykes out LBW for a very good 54, well done Jonny.  This saw Jamie Keenan come to the crease and set about the Lostock bowling with a swashbuckling 50 with 4 massive 6’s before being bowled trying to hit the ball out the ground again.  With a steady innings from Paul Entwistle, Westleighs innings ended 211 for 6 after their 45 over’s.

The bowling started steadily with Barclay and Entwistle with the ball doing a bit for both bowlers.  Entwistle took the first two wickets.  A double bowling change saw  L Sykes and J Wilkinson come on and bowled with good lines to put the pressure on the Lostock batting who fell behind the run rate with every over bowled.  Another double change by Kev saw K Ogden and K Brace come into the attack.  Kev bowled good lines and turned the ball well while Kyle tried his best to land the ball in the right areas but bowling  it closer to his own feet rather than the batter, There was some good fielding and some indifferent with Darren (50%)  Barclay taking two catches and dropping two,  L Sykes taking a catch and K Buxton taking a good stumping to restrict Lostock to 165 for 9 after  their 45 over’s.

Highlights of the match.

J Wilkinson taking a phone call while fielding on the boundary.

Kyle Ogden pretending to dive to stop a ball but just falling over.

Paul Entwistle fielding to a right-hander at leg gully instead of gully.

And finally seeing Kev Braces face when these things happened.

Westleigh 2nd v's Lostock 2nd

The second team got off to a winning start at home to Lostock .

K Andrews carried on the tradition of Westleigh captains by losing the toss and being ask to bat first. The batting got off to an indifferent start with the first wicket falling for 18. A steady second wicket partnership of 39 saw Westleigh at 57-2. The return of Jimmy Keenan opening the batting was a welcome sight after a year and a half out of the game (Welcome back Jim).  The next wicket went down without really troubling the scorers. At 62-3 saw D Lowe and D Raines at the crease. With some good stroke play and big hitting the score reached 152 before D Raines was bowled for 34 putting on a partnership of 90. With none of the other batters really troubling the scorers D Lowe was finally out for 93. Westleigh finishing their innings 197 for 9 after their 45 over’s.

Westleigh with 4 regular bowlers missing could have thought that 197 may not be enough runs.  But with the young talent in the side the likes of A woodcock, I Sephton and K Andrews Lostock were always up against it .  Lostocks batting were always struggling with only two batters hitting double figures . The highlight of their innings being Michael Houghton who hit 82.

Westleighs bowling figures were S Fitzmartain 2-36 I Sephton 2-23 K Andrews 0-26 A Woodcock 1-6. But the outstanding performance of the day was Robert Entwistle A bowler who at only 14 and bowling for the first time at adult cricket returned with figures of.
